Mrs William John Wilkes was born as Ellen Needs in Tresco in the Scilly Isles off Cornwall, England on 13 June 1864. She was baptised one month later on 12 July.

She was the daughter of George Needs (b. 1824), a laborer, and Anne Pender (b. 1821). Her father was a native of Somerset whilst her mother was a Scilly Isle native and they were married in 1848. She had six known siblings: Samuel Pender (b. 1852), John (b. 1853), George (b. 1854), Mary Elizabeth (b. 1856), Eliza (b. 1858) and Henrietta (b. 1861) and her mother had a daughter, Joyce Ann (b. 1846), from a previous relationship.

She first appears on the 1871 census living with her family at an unspecified address in Penzance, Cornwall and at the time of the 1881 census she was working as a domestic servant and living at 14 North Parade, Madron, Cornwall, the home of elderly unmarried sisters Ann and Marien Bosustow.

Ellen Needs born 13 June 1864 Madron, Cornwall England. Married in 1880 to James Wilkes, born 1860 St. Just, Cornwall.

Son; William Wilkes born July 18, 1888 born Cornwall died June 1, 1947 Akron, Ohio. In a 1920 Census of Akron, Ohio Summit County William shows his wife; Rowlina and son, Walter Wilkes.

She was the daughter of George Needs born Yatton, Bristol Somerset and Ann Pender born Bryher Scilly Isles, Cornwall.

Sisters; Mary Elizabeth Needs, Elizabeth Needs 1858-1914, Henrietta Needs.

Ellen Wilkes came over on the TITANIC via Carpathia the ship that picked up the survivors in 1912 to New York from Southampton, England.

Her sister was Mary Elizabeth Needs ( William Rowe Hocking). Ellen and Elizabeth were two of the 690 survivors.

They were to meet up with her nephew Sidney Hocking in Akron, Ohio.

Ellen was in Titanic life boat #16. Shown above.

Ellen was in lifeboat no. 16 and in Akron she became a recluse and was discovered by neighbors living in squalor without heat or running water..she was suffering frost bite and partial amputation of her feet was performed prior to her death. She had 9 cats in her home during her removal who were coming in thru the broken basement windows.

Her sister Elizabeth Needs Hocking was rescued in lifeboat no. 4 along with her daughters and two grandsons but her son George Hocking had perished from the sinking of the Titanic.
